Izzie Austin is an Aotearoa / New Zealand born, Naarm / Melbourne based music photographer and filmmaker working with analogue mediums.
Izzie's photographic style is a collision of hard and soft themes, tied together by a common thread of intimacy. Izzie recognises her subjects are as intricate and multifaceted as the music they make, and is skilled at translating their musical energy and the depth of their personal essence into a unique visual format. Her distinct images reflect moments of quiet vulnerability, connection and vitality.
Her extensive archive includes local and international artists' live performances, tours, festivals, album artwork, press imagery, music videos, video stills, and recording studio sessions.
She has photographed international tours, performances and portrait sessions of artists such as King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Amyl and the Sniffers, Sharon Van Etten, Courtney Barnett, Cate Le Bon, Zach Bryan, Brett Mackenzie (Flight of the Conchords), The Murlocs, The Strokes, Desire Marea, Babe Rainbow, and Leah Senior across the USA, UK, NZ and Australia, as well as avid personal documentation of the Melbourne music scene since 2015.
Her work has appeared in publications such as Pitchfork, i-D, The Guardian, Russh, and FLOOD Magazine. Notably, she photographed King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard for the March 2023 cover of New York-based magazine Relix.
Izzie's documentation of the Melbourne music scene began as a personal recollection of her life and friendships, from pub gigs to house parties - the camera became an extension of her experience, and her documentation a result of following what energises her. This personal approach has remained as her subjects have grown in prominence, the resulting body of work reflects a unique intimate portrayal of some of contemporary musics’ most influential figures. Izzie is interested in capturing the ecosystem that exists beyond the stage and into the wider community - the connections and friendships formed between artists, crew, collaborators and audience members alike.
